The Beauty of Being Different

  • Inspiration
A beautiful pink lily stands out in a field of white roses.

How many times have you been told to stand out in the crowd, to shine brighter than the stars, to make sure you’re remembered? Being the only blindy most people ever meet makes me difficult to forget. My white cane/reflective guide dog harness doesn’t exactly […]

A Blind Girl’s Take on Non-Verbal Communication

  • Blindy Education
A cluster of plush emojis rests on a white background. The emoji faces are winking face with stuck out tongue, grimacing face, face with tears of joy, smiling face with heart shaped eyes, smiling face with sunglasses, face blowing a kiss, and smiling face licking lips.

They say 90% of communication is non-verbal. What does this mean for a blind person? Eye contact, social cues, flirtatious winks, secret smiles, shared looks, tender glances, hateful glares, welcoming nods—the list is endless. What happens when you can’t experience any of these things? Facial […]

Top Five Blind Girl Myths

  • Blindy Education
Just three average blind girls on the daily. Jenna, far left, wears a mocha brown rain jacket and dark blue jeans. Yellow lab guide dog, Susie, sits in harness at her left side, staring adorably at the yellow lab key chain on Jenna's purse. Heidi, center, wears a black rain jacket and blue jeans. Her black lab guide dog, Nile, sits in harness at her left side, staring seriously at the camera. Karen/Jenna's mom, far right, wears a blue denim jacket and black dress pants, Her golden lab guide dog, Philly, sits in harness at her left side, staring flirtatiously at Nile. The three women stand smiling at the camera beneath a dreary gray sky. The masts of boats are visible in the distance behind them, indicating the presence of the unseen marina.

A while ago, I posted about the top five blind girl perks, and in that post I mentioned the existence of blind girl myths. Well lovelies, here they are. Top Five Blind Girl Myths Blind girls are saint’s, they don’t date based on hotness or […]

How to Describe Things to Blind People

  • Communication
Jenna stands between two girls in a parking lot. Heidi, far left, wears a white t-shirt and grins toothily as her hair blows in the breeze. Jenna wears a green t-shirt and smiles happily, as she hunches forward a little to wrap an arm around Heidi. Sirena, far right, wears a white t-shirt with black butterflies and has one arm around Jenna. Of the three blind girls, she is the only one looking straight at the camera. Jenna’s eyes are mostly closed as she looks slightly down, and Heidi squints slightly up at the sky. At the bottom of the photo, a pair of golden eyes peer mournfully at the camera, as Heidi’s guide dog, Nile, attempts to inch his way into the photo.

Ever wondered how to describe a photo, a movie, or an interesting landmark to a blind person? Unlike sighted guide, there is no “correct” way to describe things, but there are a few things you can do to make your descriptions resonate. How to describe […]
